Glastonbury police warn of home improvement scam targeting elderly

1 min read

GLASTONBURY — Several New England police departments, including Glastonbury, are warning residents about a series of home improvement scams that have been targeting elderly homeowners in the region.

According to the Glastonbury Police Department, the scammers, described as white males with thick Irish, British, or Australian accents, approach victims outside their homes or at their doors, claiming to have noticed a problem with their roof or chimney.

They present business cards for non-existent companies such as Smithy Masonry and Construction, Stormtight Roofing and Masonry, and A1 Roofing, among others.

The scammers coerce the victims into signing contracts on the spot and demand an upfront payment.

However, once the payment is made, the scammers fail to return and start the promised work.

Police have found that these individuals frequently change their business names, making it difficult to track them.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to verify the legitimacy of any home improvement company by checking references and business credentials before agreeing to any work or making payments.

They also advise against signing contracts or paying for services without proper research and encourage residents to report any suspicious activity to their local police department.

Residents who have fallen victim to such scams are encouraged to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigations.

The police are determined to put a stop to these fraudulent activities and protect the community from further harm.
