THOMASTON — Two tobacco retailers in Thomaston were cited for selling products to underage customers during a compliance check conducted by local police and state officials on Oct. 25.
The Thomaston Police Department, working with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services’ Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, inspected 10 establishments that sell tobacco products and electronic cigarettes.
Thomaston Smoke & Vape at 310 South Main Street and Smoker’s Mart at 76 Watertown Road were found non-compliant with state laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco and e-cigarette products to individuals under 21.
Clerks at both establishments received $300 infractions.
Eight other retailers passed the compliance check, including One Stop Convenience, Shawn’s Smoke & Vape Store, two Citgo Food Marts, Walgreens, Albie’s Package Store, Smoke Zone & Convenience Store, and Andrew’s Package Store.
Connecticut law requires retailers to check photo identification of anyone appearing under 30 before selling tobacco or e-cigarette products.
The state’s Department of Revenue Services, which licenses tobacco retailers, will review the non-compliant inspection results for possible administrative action.
