Single vehicle crash on I-91 in Ryegate results in fire, driver safe

RYEGATE — A single-vehicle collision involving a car and a deer led to a vehicle fire on Interstate 91 South near mile marker 111 on Oct. 23.

Christine Gelwicks, 60, of Katonah, New York, was driving a 2021 Kia Telluride when she struck a deer at approximately 6:49 p.m. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire.

Gelwicks, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, managed to exit the vehicle unharmed.

Vermont State Police, alongside local fire and EMS crews, responded to the scene.

I-91 South was closed temporarily as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

The Kia was deemed totaled and was subsequently towed by JTB Towing.

Gelwicks was transported to Cottage Hospital for evaluation following the incident.

The road conditions were dry, and the weather was clear at the time of the accident.

No further injuries were reported.
