SOUTHAMPTON — The Southampton Police Department issued a “Scam Alert” today after a local family was defrauded out of a substantial sum of money in a bail-related scam.

According to authorities, the family received a call from an individual claiming to be a court or law office representative, stating that a friend or relative had been arrested and required bail money.

The scammer instructed the family to provide cash to a supposed court employee who would collect the funds at their residence.

The Southampton Police Department is urging the public to verify any such claims by contacting the police or family members before sending or handing over any money.

In connection with the scam, the police are inquiring if anyone noticed a vehicle parked along Russellville Road between the addresses of 52 and 100 on Oct. 21 between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

They are asking anyone with information to reach out to Officer Joel Kupeyan at [email protected].

Authorities are keen to gather any details that could lead to the identification of the individuals responsible for the scam.
