Maine State Police arrest suspect in Waterville shooting death

WATERVILLE — Maine State Police made an arrest Tuesday in the shooting death of a man in a Waterville parking lot.

Waterville Police Department responded to a call at approximately 6:29 a.m. at the parking lot of Mount Joseph at 7 Highwood Street after reports of multiple gunshots.

Officers found a deceased male inside a vehicle, later identified as 47-year-old Stephen Killam of Fairfield.

Witnesses saw a black Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck leaving the scene and provided a license plate number to the police.

Authorities across the area were alerted to be on the lookout for the truck.

Clinton Police Chief Rusty Bell located the truck and the driver, 53-year-old Richard Hatt of Clinton, at around 8:55 a.m. The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central and Evidence Response Technicians arrived to process the scene and interview witnesses.

Hatt, known to have had a connection with Killam, was arrested and charged with murder.

He has been transported to the Kennebec County Jail.

Killam’s body will be taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday.

The Maine State Police, together with Waterville Detectives, continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
