Suspect in Boston Common stabbing arrested by police

BOSTON — After a diligent investigation following a stabbing incident at Boston Common, Boston Police have apprehended a suspect believed to be responsible for the violent assault earlier this month.

At 8:18 a.m. on Oct. 1, officers from District A-1 were alerted to an assault and battery in progress near the Brewer Fountain in Boston Common.

Upon arrival, they discovered an adult male victim with multiple stab wounds.

The officers provided first aid and applied a tourniquet until the victim could be transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

Following the incident, District A-1 detectives initiated an extensive investigation which led to the identification of a suspect.

An arrest warrant was subsequently issued.

In a separate operation focusing on drug enforcement, officers from the Drug Control Units of Districts A-1, E-5, and D-4 spotted 27-year-old Philip Chen of Quincy, MA, at approximately 12:10 a.m. on Oct. 12 at the intersection of Summer St. and Otis St. downtown.

Recognizing Chen as the suspect with an outstanding warrant for the Boston Common stabbing, officers detained him without incident.

Chen faces charges including Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Assault & Battery on an Elderly and/or Disabled Person with Serious Injury, and Larceny under $250 from an Elderly and/or Disabled Person.

He is set to be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court.

The swift action by the Boston Police Department underscores their commitment to public safety and their ability to respond effectively to violent crimes in the city.
