STAMFORD — A 71-year-old New York resident died Friday after his SUV struck a utility pole on Atlantic Street, Stamford Police Department officials said.

James Morley was driving near 690 Atlantic St. when his vehicle crashed at about 11:52 a.m. Patrol officers who arrived at the scene found Morley unresponsive with airbags deployed.

The Stamford Fire Department extricated him from the SUV and provided immediate medical care.

Morley was transported to Stamford Hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition before being pronounced dead.

The Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (C.A.R.S.) is investigating the incident.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Morley may have suffered a medical episode before the crash.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will make the final determination of the cause.

Sgt. Jeffrey Booth of C.A.R.S. urges witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to contact the squad at (203) 977-4712.
