NEWBURY — An 83-year-old man sustained minor injuries after his vehicle struck a guardrail on US Route 302 near Wallace Hill Road on Monday morning.

Vermont State Police said David Ilsley of Woodsville, New Hampshire, was wearing his seat belt when he apparently fell asleep behind the wheel of his 2019 Jeep Cherokee around 11:24 a.m.

The SUV drifted off the wet roadway in cloudy conditions and collided with the end of a metal guardrail, totaling the vehicle.

Emergency responders transported Ilsley to Cottage Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

JTB Towing removed the wrecked Cherokee from the scene, and the Vermont Agency of Transportation has been alerted to assess and repair the damaged guardrail.

Authorities reported no need for court action, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
