BRIDGTON — A 64-year-old woman from Sweden was hospitalized early Sunday morning after suffering a head injury in a reported domestic violence assault at a residence on Black Mountain Road.
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, alongside Bridgton Police and the United Ambulance Service, responded to the call at approximately 1:45 a.m. The victim, whose name has not been released, was able to leave the house as officers arrived.
She was transported to Brighton Hospital for treatment and is expected to be released later this morning.
Authorities said the suspect, identified as 65-year-old James Godfrey Shepherd of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, remained inside the residence when law enforcement arrived.
Deputies established a perimeter and made repeated attempts to contact Shepherd, but were initially unsuccessful.
After obtaining a search warrant, deputies entered the residence around 5:10 a.m. and arrested Shepherd without further incident.
He faces charges of elevated aggravated domestic violence assault and creating a police standoff.
Shepherd was taken to the Oxford County Jail where he was admitted.
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office has not provided further details on the incident, as the investigation is ongoing.
