BETHEL — A Barre man with multiple outstanding warrants was arrested Thursday after leading Windsor County Sheriff’s deputies on a brief car chase and subsequent foot pursuit.

Corey A. Couture, 42, of Barre, failed to stop for authorities around 3:55 p.m. when Sgt.

Beraldi attempted to pull over a red Pontiac on North Main Street during a drug trafficking operation.

The chase ended on Christian Hill after Couture’s vehicle nearly collided with Lt. Leonard’s cruiser and he was forced to stop.

Couture fled on foot but was apprehended by Deputy Jackson Howe, who sustained minor injuries in the process.

Couture requested medical attention and was transported to Gifford Medical Center, then to Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield.

A female passenger was also in the vehicle with Couture at the time of his arrest.

The suspect is facing charges on four outstanding warrants, including failure to appear for felony fentanyl trafficking and misdemeanor transportation of drugs into a detention center, vehicle operation without the owner’s consent, possession of stolen property valued over $900, and felony eluding police.

New charges include two counts of gross negligent operation, two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of attempting to elude, false reports to law enforcement, and resisting arrest.

Couture’s vehicle was seized, and a search warrant is expected to be issued due to suspected narcotics inside the vehicle.

The Windsor County Sheriff’s Department commended the deputies involved for their professionalism, with special recognition given to Deputy Howe for his quick response and effort during the incident.

Couture is currently lodged at the Southern State Correctional Facility and is awaiting court action.
