Three-vehicle crash in Cavendish leaves one critically injured, several hospitalized

CAVENDISH — A multi-vehicle collision on VT Route 103 near Proctorsville Gulf resulted in life-threatening injuries and several other injuries on Oct. 1 at 4:32 p.m., according to Vermont State Police.

Authorities said Tommy Newhall, 41, of Chester, was driving a 2010 Cadillac CTS northbound when he side-swiped a 2024 Hyundai Tucson driven by Caroline Wharton-Ewing, 69, of Keene, NH.

Wharton-Ewing’s vehicle rolled over several times, ultimately coming to rest on its tires.

Newhall’s vehicle then collided head-on with a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas operated by Jamie Dickey-Wilson, 37, of Ludlow.

Newhall, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Wharton-Ewing and her passenger, Thomas Ewing, 70, received minor and non-life-threatening injuries, respectively, and were taken to Springfield Hospital along with Dickey-Wilson and two juvenile passengers, who also had non-life-threatening injuries.

Vehicle #1 and Vehicle #3 suffered significant front-end damage, while Vehicle #2 incurred moderate damage all over.

The crash investigation is ongoing, and witnesses are encouraged to contact Trooper Alibozek at the Westminster Barracks with any information.

Responding to the scene were Chester Police and Ambulance, Springfield Ambulance, Ludlow Ambulance, Proctorsville Fire Department, Twinline Towing, and J&M Towing.

Traffic on VT Route 103 was closed during the crash investigation.
