EASTHAM — A single-vehicle crash Sunday night left two people injured and knocked out power in the area after a car struck a utility pole on Nauset Road, police said.
The Eastham Police and Fire Departments responded to the 2000 block of Nauset Road at approximately 9:45 p.m. Sept. 29 for reports of a vehicle on fire after hitting a pole.
First responders found a rolled-over vehicle and utility pole ablaze, with live electrical wires on the ground.
Nearby residents had already pulled two occupants from the vehicle before emergency crews arrived.
Both occupants suffered injuries.
Eastham firefighters treated the patients and worked to control the vehicle fire while waiting for Eversource to shut off power to the downed lines.
The Wellfleet Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Following an on-scene investigation, police arrested the driver, Anthony Chiuchiolo, 21, of Wellfleet.
He faces charges of operating under the influence of liquor causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, and speeding.
Chiuchiolo was released on personal recognizance at approximately 3 a.m. and was scheduled for arraignment at Orleans District Court on Sept. 30.
Nauset Road remained closed overnight for repairs.
It reopened around 9 a.m. Monday, though repair work was ongoing at the time of the police statement.
