NORTH HAVEN — Police officers were led on a high-speed chase Thursday afternoon after encountering a suspicious vehicle believed to be connected to recent armed robberies.
At about 4:45 p.m., North Haven Police Department officers responded to a report of suspicious activity near the Chick-fil-a on Universal Drive.
Witnesses described three males wearing ski masks inside a black Volkswagen Atlas without license plates.
When the first officer arrived on scene, the suspect vehicle was seen driving south on Universal Drive and ran a red light.
An attempt to conduct a traffic stop resulted in a pursuit as the vehicle evaded police, striking the police cruiser twice, and dangerously maneuvered over traffic islands and against oncoming traffic on Montowese Ave.
The chase escalated onto I-91 North, with the suspects’ vehicle weaving through rush hour traffic at high speeds and utilizing the breakdown lane.
Due to safety concerns for other motorists, officers terminated the pursuit.
Investigations later revealed the Volkswagen Atlas was stolen from Guilford and was implicated in a string of armed robberies in the area.
Police believe their rapid response likely prevented another robbery.
The North Haven Police Department requests that anyone with information about the incident or the suspects contact Officer Brennan at x261 or the North Haven Detectives at x240.
The department assures that callers can remain anonymous.
