BROOKFIELD — A reported threat of an armed individual at Brookfield High School prompted a swift police response Wednesday afternoon, with law enforcement and school officials confirming all students and staff are safe.
The Brookfield Police Department received a call at about 3:51 p.m., reporting a possible person with a gun on the school’s campus.
However, the threat appeared to be a case of “SWATTING,” a term used to describe false emergency calls made to draw a large police response.
Initial investigations suggest the threat was originally directed at a neighboring high school but erroneously listed the address of Brookfield High School on Longmeadow Hill Road.
Officers, along with Police K9 units, quickly secured the school, moving students to a safe location and commencing a search of the premises.
Reunification procedures for students and their families began shortly after the campus was deemed secure.
Authorities have identified similar false threats in other Connecticut towns, including Newtown and Monroe, and are working with other police agencies to address the situation.
Chief Puglisi of the Brookfield Police Department has announced that additional patrols will be stationed at local schools starting tomorrow as a precautionary measure.
The investigation into the false threats is ongoing.
