First responders save infant from fentanyl overdose in Claremont

CLAREMONT — Claremont Safety Services swiftly responded to a critical situation on Sept. 19 when a 9-month-old child suffered a suspected fentanyl overdose inside a vehicle at Main and Union Streets.

Sergeant Michael Puksta of the Claremont Police Department was first on the scene, arriving within one minute of dispatch.

He administered a dose of Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, potentially saving the infant’s life.

Golden Cross Ambulance and Claremont Fire Department personnel were quick to follow, providing further assistance and transporting the child to Valley Regional Hospital for emergency care.

Due to the severity of the situation, the child was subsequently airlifted to Dartmouth Health in Lebanon, NH, by DHART helicopter.

The Claremont Police, alongside detectives, are collaborating with the Charlestown Police Department in the ongoing investigation, as the incident reportedly originated at a residence in Charlestown.

Charges are expected to be filed against an adult who was present at the time of the child’s exposure to the substance.
