Salem police warn of jury duty scam threatening arrest for missed court

1 min read

SALEM — Salem Police Department has issued a scam alert after receiving multiple reports of a fraudulent scheme targeting residents with threats of arrest for supposedly missing jury duty.

According to authorities, the scam involves individuals posing as officials from the Rockingham County Superior Court or Sheriffs, claiming that the victim has failed to appear for jury service.

They are then told that a payment must be made to avoid arrest.

Police emphasized that such claims are false, stating unequivocally that “THIS IS NOT TRUE!”

Officials reiterated that the police or sheriff’s department will never request payments over the phone, particularly not through gift cards, which is a common tactic used by scammers.

Residents are urged to be vigilant and to inform friends and family of these deceptive practices to prevent potential financial loss and distress.
