West Bridgewater police investigate prank threats to schools

WEST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Timothy Nixon and the West Bridgewater Police Department have reported an investigation into a series of prank phone calls that threatened local schools on Monday.

On Sept. 16, at about 3:10 p.m., students aboard a bus from the Howard and Spring Street schools allegedly made calls to several local businesses, claiming they were at the scene of a school shooting.

Utilizing an app to simulate gunfire sounds, the students also purportedly stated their intent to carry out a school shooting.

School officials, upon learning of the incident, immediately contacted the school resource officer, who then alerted the West Bridgewater Police.

Officers conducted interviews with the students both on the bus and later at their homes with their parents present.

After the interviews, authorities determined that the threats were not credible.

Despite the conclusion that the threats were a hoax, the West Bridgewater Police Department has decided to increase its presence at the schools on Tuesday, operating with heightened caution to ensure the safety of students and staff.
