Swanzey man arrested after 15-hour standoff with police

SWANZEY — A nearly 15-hour standoff with law enforcement ended with a Swanzey man in custody on Thursday.

The standoff began on Sept. 11 around 10:09 p.m. when the New Hampshire State Police were called to assist the Swanzey Police Department.

Ian MacNeil, 36, allegedly pointed a firearm at a Swanzey police officer while officers were responding to a disturbance at his South Road residence.

Throughout the night, state troopers and local officers worked to negotiate with MacNeil, urging him to surrender peacefully.

The standoff concluded at approximately 1 p.m. on Sept. 12 when a State Police K9 unit apprehended MacNeil.

He sustained minor injuries during the arrest and was transported to Cheshire Medical Center for evaluation.

MacNeil faces a felony charge of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

During the incident, a portion of South Road was closed and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Law enforcement officials have expressed gratitude for the community’s cooperation.

Multiple agencies, including the Swanzey Police Department, Cheshire County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Medical Services, and Swanzey Fire Department, collaborated to resolve the situation safely.
