WINOOSKI — A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 north led to DUI charges for a 25-year-old Winooski man early Sunday morning.

Vermont State Police responded to the scene near Exit 15 off ramp at approximately 3:51 a.m. after receiving reports of an accident.

The vehicle, a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta, was found with significant damage to its front right side in the town of Winooski by local police.

The operator, Musa Mayange, and his passenger, Saladi Mayange, 21, also from Winooski, were transported to UVM Medical Center for treatment.

Musa Mayange sustained minor injuries, while Saladi Mayange suffered a head injury; neither were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Investigators determined that the vehicle had been heading northbound on I-89 when it veered off the road and collided with a guardrail just before the off ramp.

Following the crash, the car fled the scene but was located shortly after by the Winooski Police Department.

Troopers suspected alcohol impairment and subsequent tests confirmed that Musa Mayange’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit.

He has been cited to appear at the Chittenden County Superior Court on Nov. 5 at 8:15 a.m. to face charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
