Boston police arrest man, recover loaded gun in Roxbury

BOSTON — Boston police officers arrested a man on firearm charges Thursday morning after responding to a call about an armed person in the Roxbury neighborhood.

At about 8:33 a.m., officers from District B-2 were dispatched to the intersection of Island Street and Gerald Street following a report of an individual who had allegedly assaulted a victim and brandished a weapon.

Police were given a detailed description of the suspect by the Boston Police Operations team.

Upon locating the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Richard Garofalo of Boston, officers conducted a pat frisk and discovered a firearm inside his backpack.

The weapon, a Smith and Wesson 380 Bodyguard, was found with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine.

Additionally, the serial number on the firearm had been defaced.

Garofalo was taken into custody and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon on a Public Way, and Defacement of a Firearm Serial Number.

He is set to be arraigned at Roxbury District Court.
