NEWPORT — A woman who was arrested in New York after being stopped in a stolen vehicle from Newport, is back in Vermont to face charges.
Police say that Samantha Shepard waived extradition, and Probation and Parole brought her back to Newport, where she was cited for the offense of Operating without Owners Consent as an Accessory, which is a felony.
The incident began back on October 27, when Terry Verdon, of Newport Center, had his vehicle stolen while it was parked at 2718 Lake Road.
Two days later, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Ticonderoga, New York, called the Vermont State Police to report that they had recovered Verdon’s stolen vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, during a traffic stop.
Two of the subjects inside the car when it was pulled over were identified as Adam Tatro and Samantha Shepard, both from Orleans County. Police also discovered numerous stolen items inside the vehicle, some of which were from a recent rash of thefts in the Newport area.
Newport Police were notified and they began working with the New York authorities to recover the stolen property.
Shepard is being lodged at the Northern State Correctional Facility for violation of her probation. Tatro is still serving time in New York.
