CARIBOU — A local man faces multiple charges after a stolen boat investigation led to the discovery of drugs and firearms at his residence.

The Caribou Police Department reported a significant burglary on July 14, where a 16-foot Aluminum Starcraft boat and other items were stolen from a home on Van Buren Road.

Nearly a month later, on Aug. 19, while responding to a complaint about a loose dog on Limestone Street, Sgt.

Chad Cochran of the Caribou Police spotted a boat resembling the stolen one.

Sgt. Cochran compared a photograph of the reported stolen boat to the one he observed and, by Aug. 21, had secured a search warrant to inspect the boat further.

The investigation confirmed the boat on Limestone Street was the one stolen from Van Buren Road.

After securing the residence, a second search warrant allowed officers to look for additional stolen property.

The search uncovered drugs, drug paraphernalia, and firearms.

Joshua Akerson, 38, was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property, possession of firearms by a prohibited person, and two counts of furnishing Schedule Z drugs.

He posted bail the same night and is scheduled for a court appearance on Oct. 3.

Sgt. Cochran was assisted by Officer Craig Peterson, Officer Douglas Bell, Officer Kegan McPherson, and K9 “Ace,” as well as Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Lucas Hafford and Eric Corbin.

The Caribou Police Department continues to investigate the initial burglary, as several items remain missing.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Caribou Police Department at 493-3301.
