Worcester police arrest two for armed robbery, recover firearm

WORCESTER — Two 18-year-old men were arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with an armed robbery after police recovered a loaded handgun from their vehicle.

Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery near Hawley and Pleasant streets at 4:12 p.m. Aug. 29.

Police were told a cell phone had been stolen and a silver Ford Fusion was identified as a potential suspect vehicle.

After locating the car on Main Street, officers arrested Javan Alvarez of West Street and Alwin Cordero of Main Street.

Both were charged with armed robbery.

A loaded handgun was found in the vehicle, leading to additional charges for Alvarez.

These include carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number and improper storage of a firearm.

The Worcester Police Department did not provide information on when the suspects would appear in court or if they had retained legal representation.
