BOSTON — A 47-year-old East Boston man was arrested Wednesday evening on charges of possessing and intending to distribute significant amounts of fentanyl and crack cocaine, according to the Boston Police Department.

At about 6:20 p.m., officers from the Drug Control Unit of District A-7 were patrolling the area of Waldemar Street when they spotted Stephen Mattaliano riding a scooter erratically in and out of the Suffolk Downs Train Station.

They observed Mattaliano exit the station and head towards a nearby wooded area.

Upon approaching, officers noticed Mattaliano with a glassine pipe to his mouth, leading them to believe he was consuming crack cocaine.

After requesting his identification, officers discovered Mattaliano had an outstanding arrest warrant and immediately handcuffed him.

A subsequent search revealed eleven plastic bags containing crack cocaine and four plastic bags with fentanyl.

Mattaliano was charged with possession with intent to distribute Class A and Class B substances.

He is slated for arraignment at the East Boston District Court.
