READSBORO — Troopers from the Shaftsbury Barracks discovered the body of 73-year-old Harold Lavanway inside his vehicle Monday morning, officials said.
Around 8 a.m. on Monday, authorities were alerted to a car over an embankment on Tunnel Street in Whitingham.
The car, a 2011 Honda Civic, was registered to Lavanway, a Readsboro resident.
Troopers confirmed Lavanway was deceased upon arrival.
The preliminary investigation suggested that Lavanway, while driving north on Tunnel Street, failed to navigate a curve properly.
After the road straightened, his vehicle veered off the shoulder and down a steep embankment, coming to rest approximately 10 feet from the road.
The exact time of the accident is not yet determined.
Lavanway’s remains will be sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to ascertain the cause and manner of his death.
State police are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Shaftsbury Barracks at 802-442-5421.
The investigation into the incident is active, and no additional details have been released.
