SOUTH HADLEY — Local authorities are cautioning residents about a new phishing scam involving Massachusetts EZPass that has emerged in the form of fraudulent text messages.
The South Hadley Police Department issued an alert advising the community that scammers are sending text messages claiming the recipient has an unpaid balance and threatening late fees.
The department emphasized that legitimate communication from EZPass would never be sent via text message but rather through postal mail.
Residents are urged to be wary of any text messages that direct them to an incorrect website.
The official website to manage EZPass accounts in Massachusetts is www.ezdrivema.com, not the “ezpassmas” URL provided in the scam texts.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has previously issued warnings regarding similar scams targeting EZPass customers.
The South Hadley Police Department is urging people to share this information with friends and family, particularly with elderly relatives who may be more vulnerable to such scams.
The department encourages anyone who encounters suspicious activity or communications purporting to be from EZPass to not engage with the message and to contact the South Hadley Police Department immediately.
