NEWPORT — The Now Playing Newport Music Series successfully completed its first season. Over 100 artists provided a wide spectrum of music and over 650 friends attended the 9 programs presented. It was a great start to a great series. Now Playing Newport is the only regular year-round music series in Newport.
Artists for the second season are being contacted for the 13 or more programs planned. Requests from artists to perform the series has been overwhelming.
The second season starts on Saturday, December 6, with the Newport Area Community Orchestra Member Recital, beginning at 2 p.m., at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, located at 44 Second Street, Newport.
The Series continues on Sunday, December 14, at 4 p.m., with the Select Chorus from Lake Region High School in a holiday program under the Direction of Dr. Sara Doncaster. This program is free.
On January 4, the 18 piece Swing North Big Band will return for the second year to present its Swinging Epiphany program. Last year it was a sellout so tickets should be purchased in advance.
On February 1, the series brings a rare chance to see three early short comedies made during the period Charlie Chaplin called “the happiest period of my career.” Bradleigh Stockwell, local filmmaker and silent film enthusiast, will be introducing these films to Newport. Come see why 100 years later, Chaplin is still considered one of the most important, and funniest people to ever appear on film, and hear about the great music composed for silent films.
Other artists for the season include Tod Pronto, Emily Nyman, The Vermont Virtuosi Trio, The Northeast Kingdom Chamber Players, Michael Arnowitt, Phil Gosselin & Jenny Dunn, Lake Region High School Jazz Band, and the renowned Green Mountain Mens Barbershop Chorus in concert at the Gateway Center.
