COLCHESTER — Eight kayakers were rescued Saturday morning from the choppy waters of Outer Malletts Bay after a distress call was received by the Colchester Police Marine Unit.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 17, a distress signal was picked up on marine channel 16, indicating that a group of kayakers required immediate help near the Lamoille River’s mouth.

The call included information that one individual had fallen into the water amidst 2-3 foot waves propelled by a strong south wind.

Responding agencies, including Colchester Technical Rescue, Colchester Rescue Squad, Colchester Fire Department, and the U.S.

Coast Guard vessel from Station Burlington, were swiftly dispatched to the scene.

The kayakers were found south of the Route 2 Sand Bar.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Colchester Police’s Marine Unit were able to transfer all eight individuals, including the person who was in the water, onto the Coast Guard vessel.

They were then safely transported to the Malletts Bay public boat launch.

Upon arrival at the boat launch, the Colchester Rescue team evaluated the kayakers and confirmed that there were no injuries.

Following the incident, the Colchester Police Marine Unit issued a safety reminder for boaters on Lake Champlain.

They stressed the importance of being aware of changing weather conditions, ensuring all equipment is in good working order, informing someone of the planned route and expected return, and prioritizing safety by not hesitating to turn back if conditions become too difficult.
