RUMFORD — A grand jury handed up a 16-count indictment Thursday against a Massachusetts man for his role in a fatal crash that claimed the life of his 9-year-old son and seriously injured three others, following a months-long investigation by the Rumford Police Department.
Matthew Kellogg, 42, of Hopedale, faces charges including one count of felony manslaughter, four counts of felony aggravated assault, three counts of felony aggravated operating under the influence of alcohol, three counts of driving to endanger, three counts of felony reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The investigation stemmed from a head-on collision on March 9 at approximately 3:12 p.m. on U.S. Route 2.
Kellogg, driving eastbound in a 2016 Subaru Impreza, had a blood-alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit of 0.08%, with his two sons as passengers.
His vehicle swerved into the westbound lane, crashing into a 2005 Volvo-80 operated by F. Michael Piveronas, 61, of Rumford.
Piveronas, the sole occupant of his vehicle, suffered life-threatening injuries and has yet to fully recover.
Kellogg and his sons were also seriously injured.
The 9-year-old was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts by first responders and hospital staff.
The 6-year-old was transferred to a Portland hospital for further treatment.
Both Kellogg and his younger son have since been released from the hospital.
No fault was found with Piveronas or his vehicle, and a search warrant for Kellogg’s vehicle uncovered both opened and unopened alcohol containers.
A vehicle autopsy indicated no mechanical defects.
Kellogg has arranged to surrender to Maine authorities, with an arraignment scheduled at Oxford County Superior Court in South Paris on a forthcoming date.
