Springfield police nab suspect in early morning armed robbery

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police arrested a man early Wednesday in connection with an armed robbery involving a box cutter.

Police said they detained 22-year-old Edwin Velazquez-Rodriguez around 5 a.m. after a victim reported being assaulted and robbed of his bicycle on the 100 block of State Street about an hour earlier.

The Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center (R-TAC) assisted officers by reviewing surveillance video and providing a description of the suspect.

Velazquez-Rodriguez was apprehended at the intersection of Main Street and Wilcox Street.

Velazquez-Rodriguez, who also had an outstanding warrant from Aug. 8, is charged with armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and the offenses listed in the default warrant, including assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, defacing property, and attempting to commit a crime.
