REVERE — Revere Police have issued a warning to the community about an uptick in apartment rental scams on Facebook Marketplace.
In recent weeks, authorities have seen an increase in reports of fraudulent rental property listings on the social platform.
Scammers posing as sellers post properties for rent and then request payment through wire transfers or gift cards without meeting the potential renters.
Once the payment is sent, the fraudulent seller disappears.
Victims of these scams are encouraged to report the incidents not only to Revere Police but also to federal authorities for additional tracking and investigation.
Tips can be sent anonymously by texting 847-411 with the keyword ‘Reverepd’ followed by the tip information, or by calling the Revere Police business line at 781-284-1212.
For further action, residents should report these scams to the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at https://www.ic3.gov.
