Fatal pedestrian accident near Hogback Mountain Overlook

MARLBORO — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a motor vehicle on VT-9 near the Hogback Mountain Scenic Overlook on Saturday.

At around 11:03 a.m., Vermont State Police from the Westminster Barracks were called to the scene following multiple 911 reports of the incident involving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 77-year-old Paul A. Rokke of Belmond, Iowa.

Deerfield Valley Rescue and the Marlboro Fire Department also responded to the emergency.

The pedestrian, identified as 74-year-old Constance J. Vrooman of Sharon Springs, New York, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rokke, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, did not sustain any injuries, and there was no reported damage to his vehicle.

Clear skies and dry road conditions were noted at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation by the authorities.
