Suspect nabbed after Dorchester shot spotter alert, high-speed chase

BOSTON — A suspect was arrested early Saturday after triggering a shot spotter activation and leading police on a high-speed chase in Dorchester, authorities said.

At about 1:20 a.m., officers assigned to District C-11 responded to the technology-driven alert at 45 Bullard Street.

Although no 911 calls were made, officers found ballistic evidence at the scene with no reports of injuries or damage, according to the Boston Police Department.

Simultaneously, officers from District B-2 canvassing nearby Geneva Avenue and Olney Street spotted a scooter speeding toward Columbia Road, with two riders not wearing helmets.

After witnessing the scooter run a stop sign, officers broadcast its description.

The pursuit escalated as the scooter’s operator, later identified as 19-year-old Jayden Fernandez of Dorchester, ignored a red light and a subsequent attempt by officers to perform a traffic stop, using their cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens.

Fernandez evaded police briefly but was later found at 296 Bowdoin Street.

In an attempt to escape, he collided with a marked police cruiser and then tried to flee on foot.

Officers quickly apprehended him.

A pat frisk resulted in the recovery of a Remington Arms RP9 handgun from Fernandez’s pants, equipped with a high-capacity magazine.

Boston EMS evaluated him for injuries before he was taken into custody.

Fernandez faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a large capacity feeding device, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

His arraignment is set for Dorchester District Court.
