AUGUSTA — The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning Friday about fraudulent phone calls being made to residents from someone claiming to be Sgt.
Johnson, a scam designed to solicit personal information and money.
Authorities were alerted to the scam after several residents reported receiving suspicious calls.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed they do have staff members by that name, but they emphasized that none of their deputies would ever call citizens requesting money or personal information.
Officials are reminding the public that the Sheriff’s Office does not make unsolicited calls to ask for personal details or financial contributions.
Residents who receive such calls are advised not to provide any information and to hang up immediately, then report the incident to the Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the source of the scam calls and is working to prevent further occurrences.
People are encouraged to inform friends and family about the scam to prevent them from falling victim to these fraudulent activities.
