WORCESTER — A 21-year-old man was arrested Thursday after police discovered an unregistered firearm during a traffic stop in Worcester.
Shane Rivera-Borrero faces multiple charges after officers found a so-called ghost gun in his backpack, according to the Worcester Police Department.
The incident occurred around 7:46 p.m. on Aug. 1 when officers pulled over a vehicle on Quinsigamond Avenue for having a heavily tinted license plate.
The stop was initiated after someone in the car yelled an expletive at an officer during an earlier traffic stop.
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noticed Rivera-Borrero, a backseat passenger, breathing heavily.
When asked if there was a gun in the car, one occupant admitted to having a firearm in the console.
All four men in the vehicle were asked to exit.
During a search, officers found a firearm in Rivera-Borrero’s backpack.
He admitted to not having a license to carry.
The Worcester Police Crime Scene Unit later determined the weapon was a ghost gun without a serial number.
Rivera-Borrero was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, improper storage of a firearm, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
A legal, registered firearm belonging to the driver was also found in the console.
The driver received a verbal warning about the tinted license plate cover, and the other two passengers were released.
