DERRY — A fire broke out at Shaw’s supermarket on 55 Crystal Avenue early Wednesday, prompting a swift response from multiple fire departments.
Derry Fire Emergency Communications Division received a 911 call at approximately 3:06 a.m. from an employee reporting a fire on the roof of the supermarket, which is part of Hood Plaza, a 226,919 square foot commercial structure equipped with fire sprinklers and alarm systems.
Derry Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Ladder 4, Medic 1, and Car 1, led by Battalion Chief Ronald Sebastian, were dispatched immediately to the scene.
Crews arriving at the minimally staffed store confirmed an active fire on the roof with light smoke inside the building.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, ensured all employees had evacuated, and removed smoke from the premises.
As of this release, Shaw’s Supermarket remains closed pending an investigation into the damage and potential food contamination.
The Derry Fire Department is collaborating with the Derry Building Inspector and Health Department Officer to determine when the store can safely re-open.
Customers are directed to the Londonderry or Windham Shaw’s locations for their shopping needs.
No other stores within Hood Plaza were affected, and they will continue operations as usual.
Additional assistance was provided by fire departments from Auburn, Hampstead, Londonderry, Salem, and Windham, with Atkinson, Hudson, and Nashua departments offering station coverage.
The incident was declared under control at 4:12 a.m. Derry Fire Marshal David Eastman is leading the investigation and has found that the fire originated in an area under construction on the roof but does not appear to be suspicious.
There were no injuries reported among civilians or firefighters.
