Morristown man found dead, police investigate suspicious circumstances

MORRISTOWN — The Morristown Police Department is investigating the death of a local resident after he was found deceased in his home on Elmore Street.

Richard Cote, 76, was discovered by police on July 24 at around 8 a.m. following a welfare check requested by an associate who expressed concern for his well-being.

The MPD entered Cote’s residence at 813 Elmore St and found him dead under circumstances they consider suspicious.

The case is being actively investigated, and as of the evening of July 25, detectives were following up on leads.

Cote’s body has been sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to ascertain the cause and manner of his death.

The MPD has reassured the community that there appears to be no ongoing threat related to this incident.

They are awaiting preliminary autopsy results and continue to seek information from the public.

Authorities are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who was near 813 Elmore St on the evening of July 23.

The investigation has seen collaboration among several law enforcement agencies, including the Vermont State Police Major Crimes Unit – Crime Scene Search Team, Stowe Police Department, Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department, Hardwick Police Department, and VT Fish & Game Wardens.

Police Chief Jason Luneau expressed gratitude to those who have already provided information and stressed the importance of community assistance in resolving the case.
