Man injured, woman killed in Grand Isle crash

GRAND ISLE — A two-vehicle collision on US Route 2 resulted in the death of a New York woman and injuries to a New Jersey man late Tuesday afternoon.

Vermont State Police reported that the crash occurred at around 5:52 p.m. near 32 US Route 2 when a 2010 Toyota Yaris, driven by Shantel Lafountain, 26, of Champlain, NY, struck the rear-end of a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Richard Meissner, 53, of Clark, NJ.

Lafountain was transported to UVM Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Meissner sustained suspected minor injuries and was also taken to UVM Medical Center.

The Jeep sustained rear-end damage while the Toyota suffered front-end damage.

The weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the incident.

Meissner was wearing his seatbelt, but it is unknown if Lafountain was wearing hers.

Authorities were assisted at the scene by Grand Isle Rescue, Grand Isle Fire Department, and South Hero Rescue.

The accident is currently under investigation and witnesses are urged to contact the Vermont State Police at St. Albans Barracks with any information regarding the crash.
