Springfield inmate accused of assaulting correctional officer

SPRINGFIELD — An inmate at the Southern State Correctional Facility (SSCF) is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a staff member early Friday morning.

Vermont State Police said George G. Tarbell, 40, attacked correctional officer Colby Johnson at approximately 8:15 a.m. on July 12.

The nature of the assault was not immediately disclosed, but the incident prompted a swift response from facility security and law enforcement.

Following the incident, Tarbell was cited to appear in the Vermont Superior Court, Windsor Criminal Division, for the assault charge.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 27 at 8 a.m.

Tarbell, who is currently an inmate at SSCF, remains in custody at the facility.

No bail has been set, as the accused is already incarcerated.

Details about potential injuries to Officer Johnson or the circumstances leading to the assault have not been released.

The Vermont State Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
