Multi-state pursuit ends with shooting in Pittsburg, suspect in custody

PITTSBURG — A multi-state law enforcement chase ended in gunfire and the capture of a Rhode Island man wanted on felony charges Sunday evening.

Rhode Island authorities informed New Hampshire police that Brendan Sackal, 30, of Hopkington, Rhode Island, was wanted for possessing a high-capacity magazine.

Sackal was reportedly spotted near U.S. Route 3 in Stratford, NH, prompting a response from Border Patrol agents.

Upon locating Sackal’s vehicle near Indian Stream Road in Pittsburg, agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

Sackal fled, leading authorities on a chase that crossed into Vermont.

Vermont State Police joined the pursuit, which concluded in the town of Burke after Sackal’s vehicle struck two police cruisers and lost control.

Following the crash, Sackal opened fire on the troopers and border agents.

During the exchange, Sackal sustained critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

He was provided medical aid at the scene and taken into custody.

Sackal is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

The Pittsburg Police Department confirmed it had no involvement in the incident.

Officials have not disclosed the current charges Sackal faces following the confrontation.
