Fugitive in child sex assault case in Naugatuck captured

NAUGATUCK — A fugitive wanted for sexually assaulting a minor in Naugatuck has been arrested in Brunswick, Georgia, following a collaborative effort between local authorities and the FBI.

Jamel Young, 53, was apprehended on July 15 after Naugatuck Police Detectives received a tip about his whereabouts.

The Brunswick Police Department swiftly located and arrested Young without incident.

The charges against Young stem from allegations that he sexually assaulted a 9-year-old girl while in Naugatuck.

An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with one count of first-degree sexual assault, one count of attempted first-degree sexual assault, one count of fourth-degree sexual assault, and one count of risk of injury to a minor.

The warrant called for nationwide extradition and set a bond of $750,000.

Currently detained in Georgia, Young awaits extradition to Connecticut, where he will face charges.

Naugatuck Police Department has commended Detective Rinaldi for his investigative work on the case and expressed gratitude to both the Brunswick Police Department and the FBI New Haven division for their assistance in the arrest.
