UNDERHILL — A fire that erupted Monday evening at an apartment building on Park Street has been ruled accidental, authorities said.

The Underhill/Jericho Fire Department received a call at 6:43 p.m. on July 15 about a blaze at 14 Park Street.

Firefighters arriving at the scene found flames bursting from the first-floor windows on the east and south sides of the structure.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the first-floor apartment, preventing further spread.

While the impacted apartment sustained significant fire damage, neighboring units experienced smoke damage.

No injuries were reported during the incident or the firefighting efforts.

Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Martel, after assessing the scene, called in the Department of Public Safety Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit (FEIU) to assist in determining the fire’s origin and cause.

Investigators from the FEIU arrived on Tuesday, July 16, and concluded that the fire started in a southwest corner bedroom on the first floor due to a candle being accidentally knocked over.

The fire was thus classified as accidental.

The fire has temporarily displaced all tenants of the building, with the Red Cross, family, and friends providing necessary assistance.

The estimated damage to the property is $125,000.
