FREETOWN — A fatal vehicle crash late Sunday night on Copicut Road claimed the life of a New Bedford man and left another seriously injured, authorities said.
Freetown Police and Fire Departments responded to a call at approximately 11:30 p.m. on July 14, after a 9-1-1 report of a severe single-vehicle accident near the intersection with Bell Rock Road in Assonet.
Upon arrival, emergency crews found a 1997 Jeep Wrangler off the roadway and in the woods.
A 29-year-old male passenger was discovered with grave injuries and was quickly transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford by Berkley Fire Department personnel.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Edmund Arsenault, Jr., of New Bedford, was ejected from the Jeep and found unresponsive.
Freetown Fire-Rescue rushed Arsenault to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, where he was pronounced dead.
The Freetown Police Department, alongside Massachusetts State Police Detectives from the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
