BOSTON — Boston Police Department’s District D-4 officers seized 13 mopeds and arrested three suspects on Monday, July 8, during a targeted moped and motorcycle enforcement operation in the Back Bay area.
The operation, conducted by officers assigned to the South End/Back Bay division, aimed at addressing motor vehicle law violations specifically related to mopeds and motorcycles.
In the course of their patrol, officers recovered thirteen mopeds for various infractions and issued multiple Massachusetts Uniform Citations.
Among the arrests was 21-year-old Thomas Gomez-Vera of East Boston, who attempted to flee when officers informed him his moped was unregistered and uninsured.
Gomez-Vera initiated his scooter and tried to drive away on the sidewalk, making contact with two officers in the process.
After a brief struggle, he was detained.
Gomez-Vera is facing charges of Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Failure to Obey a Lawful Command by a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
He was also cited for operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle, an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, and a Marked Lanes Violation.
His arraignment is scheduled in Boston Municipal Court.
Additionally, Recep Demirel, 28, of Boston, was arrested and is expected to face charges of Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and operating an Uninsured and Unregistered Motor Vehicle.
Kenan Yeler, 20, of Somerville, was also taken into custody and is anticipated to be arraigned on charges of Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle.
The Boston Police Department continues to enforce traffic laws to ensure public safety and reduce incidents involving illegal moped and motorcycle activities.
