TRUMBULL — A local man drowned while swimming at Pinewood Lake in the Nichols section late Wednesday.

William Krahe, 38, was pulled from the water just after 7 p.m. and subsequently pronounced dead at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center, according to Trumbull police.

Krahe had been swimming near a floating dock anchored off the shoreline beach with family members when he submerged and failed to resurface.

Lifeguards and swimmers initially attempted to locate him without success.

Sgt. Robert Harry, a member of the Trumbull Police Dive Team, and Nichols Fire Capt.

John Plofkin located Krahe at the lake’s bottom.

They brought him to the surface and into a rescue boat, where Nichols and Trumbull Center fire departments’ members administered medical aid while returning to shore.

Trumbull EMS continued medical treatment and transported Krahe to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Pinewood Lake and the adjacent beach were closed following the incident but reopened Thursday morning.

Police interviewed witnesses and indicated the drowning appears to be accidental.

The Pinewood Lake Association, a private organization in Nichols, manages the lake, beach, and clubhouse on around 60 acres.
