The scholarship was established by Sheryl Washburn Carter, former Vice President of Patient Care Services at North Country Hospital from 2008 to 2013, and her husband Buddy. Carter had a passion for rural healthcare and nursing, with a particular interest in supporting Northeast Kingdom residents pursuing nursing degrees to provide excellent local healthcare.

“Sheryl loved one-to-one mentoring of nurses and fostering their growth into role models and mentors for their staff,” a spokesperson for the scholarship fund said. “This scholarship is a result of her dedication to nurturing local nursing talent.”

The Sheryl M. (Washburn) and Buddy L. Carter Nursing Scholarship was established following Carter’s retirement from North Country Hospital. It serves as an example of how individual generosity can significantly impact a community by supporting local healthcare education.
