Springfield police arrest man on firearms charges

SPRINGFIELD — Police arrested a 24-year-old man Sunday on multiple firearms and drug charges after responding to a report of an assault.

Jason Dunbar of Springfield was taken into custody around 6:35 p.m. on the 200 block of Central Street, according to the Springfield Police Department.

Officers seized a loaded firearm and approximately 18 grams of crack cocaine during the arrest.

Police initially responded at 6:06 p.m. to an apartment on Coomes Street for a report of a suspect pistol whipping a female victim.

Officers located Dunbar in a nearby parking lot and conducted a traffic stop after he entered a vehicle.

Dunbar fled on foot but was quickly apprehended.

Police said he reached for his pocket as officers attempted to detain him.

A loaded firearm was found in Dunbar’s pocket along with the cocaine.

At the time of arrest, Dunbar had several outstanding warrants, including firearms charges from a May 9 incident.

Dunbar faces multiple new charges including carrying a firearm without a license, trafficking cocaine, and resisting arrest.

He also had existing warrants for charges such as violating an abuse prevention order and assault and battery on a police officer.
