Springfield police respond to bomb scare, no threat found

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Police Department received a 9-1-1 call at 10:05 a.m. on June 17 reporting a bomb inside a backpack at a Main Street bus stop.

Upon arrival, officers detained a male near the suspicious backpack and launched an investigation.

With the Springfield Fire Department’s help in safety planning and investigation, the nearby businesses were evacuated and the road was closed as a precaution.

Additional support was provided by Weathersfield Police Department, Chester Police Department, Vermont Fish & Wildlife, and Vermont State Police.

After thorough interviews and investigation, authorities determined the backpack did not contain an explosive device.

The Springfield Fire Department inspected the backpack to ensure there was no threat to public safety.

Following the confirmation, the streets were reopened, and the backpack was returned to its owner.

The Springfield Police Department has declared no current threat to public safety and has thanked the responding agencies for their cooperation and teamwork, which Police Chief Jeffrey S.

Burnham stated made the emergency response safer and more effective.

The initial bomb threat report remains under investigation.
