ORANGE — Vermont State Police has released the names of the trooper involved in a fatal shooting in Orange and the man who was killed.
Trooper Adam Roaldi, who has been with the state police since 2019 and assigned to the Berlin office since last September, fired his weapon at 41-year-old Jason Lowery on Wednesday.
The incident occurred after Roaldi responded to a welfare check at a residence on Spencer Road.
An autopsy revealed that Lowery, who had lived in various locations in central Vermont, died from gunshot wounds to the neck and torso.
The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.
The confrontation began when Roaldi arrived for a welfare check related to a juvenile at approximately 1:20 p.m.
After addressing the initial call, Roaldi discovered Lowery unconscious in a car and noticed a sawed-off shotgun.
The ensuing struggle and shooting were recorded on Roaldi’s body camera.
Lowery was discovered to have an active arrest warrant for trafficking fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia was found in his vehicle post-incident.
State Police’s Major Crime Unit continues to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, and Roaldi has been placed on paid relief-from-duty status.
