CHICOPEE — A routine traffic stop early Friday morning led to the arrest of a Connecticut man on multiple drug charges, according to Chicopee Police.
Detectives on a traffic assignment spotted a vehicle speeding on Chicopee Street around 12:50 a.m. The car, driven by 51-year-old William Preston of Enfield, Connecticut, was going over 40 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Upon stopping the vehicle, officers discovered that Preston’s license had been suspended.
During an inventory of Preston’s car, officers found a small plastic bag containing a white powder suspected to be cocaine and a sandwich bag with black and white wax baggies, typically used to package heroin.
One of the baggies was open, revealing a brownish powder inside.
Preston was arrested and charged with possession of a Class A drug subsequent offense, possession of a Class B drug subsequent offense, speeding, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
The incident adds to a growing concern over drug-related offenses in the region.
